In its glorious era until 1959, the Sultanate of Kutai Kartanegara in Martadipura has very wide territory. The territory covered some autonomous territory in East Borneo, includes:
1. Kutai Kartanegara Regency
2. Kutai Barat Regency
3. Kutai Timur Regency
4. Balikpapan City
5. Bontang City
6. Samarinda City


In 1959, the territory of Kutai Kartanegara Sultanate or Special Region of Kutai was divided into 3 second level Local Government, i.e., Kutai Regency, Balikpapan City, and Samarinda City.


Since that time, the government of Kutai Kartanegara Sultanate was ended after the official announcement of 2nd level Local Government of Kutai Regency by the Law No. 27 Year 1959 concerning the Status Withdrawal of Special Region of Kutai.
